Beware Termite Swarming Season

Termites Can Destroy Your #1 Investment, Your Home and Business

PARSIPPANY, NJ, March 27, 2008 – As warmer weather approaches, some pests are beginning to swarm and are working underground to find a way into homes and businesses.

“As the weather improves and temperatures rise, termite colonies begin to swarm, or begin their mating period,” said Phil Pierce, Technical Services Manager at Western Pest Services.  “These small insects can be a nuisance, and if left unchecked they can completely destroy someone’s home or business.”

During a termite swarming period, generally in the spring when temperatures begin to rise for the year, a colony’s queen will lay approximately 30,000 eggs a day.  These eggs hatch and grow into termites that travel through homes and businesses, causing serious and expensive damage as they eat and travel their way through lumber, wood panels, flooring, sheetrock, wallpaper, plastics, paper products and fabric made of plant fibers.

A few ways to prevent a termite infestation:

• Avoid placing woodpiles, a typical home for termites, against a building’s foundation or walls
• Keep walls free of dirt piles and avoid letting trellises or plants bridge from the ground to the siding
• Make sure the wood part of a house or business does not make contact with the ground

Termites

Termites range in size between three and 20 millimeters, generally have an off-white body, straight antennae, and flying termites have four wings that are all the same length.  If a person suspects their home might be the site of a termite infestation, they should contact their nearest certified pest management company and schedule a free home inspection immediately.
