Bed Bug Detection

Bed Bug Detection

You can rely on Western

Employing specially-trained bed bug dogs is one of the most effective ways to determine if you have bed bugs in your home or business. They are 99% effective when it comes to identifying these pests-almost 70% more effective than humans.

  • A single room can be inspected in much less time than any other available method.
  • Under ideal conditions, each dog can inspect up to 125 rooms per day.
  • A dog's nose has been used as an inspection tool for drugs and bombs by law enforcement for many years. In fact, it is 10,000 times more receptive than a human nose. Even the Presidential airplane, Air Force One, is inspected by a dog before every takeoff. Now its accuracy and efficiency is used to detect and locate sources of bed bugs with meticulous precision.
  • Scent dogs offer quicker and more accurate bed bug detection results leading to lower treatment costs for property owners and insurers.
Bed bugs are blood-seeking insects known for infesting areas where people and animals sleep, and are a growing problem in North America, particularly in areas with large or transient human populations, such as apartment buildings, hotels, cruise ships, and dormitories. Their bites cause itchy red welts, skin infections and allergic reactions as a result of the saliva they inject when they feed.

Notoriously hard to find, they hide adeptly in bed frames, mattresses and box springs, clothing, luggage, furniture, book bindings, behind baseboards, and under wallpaper. They are difficult to eradicate and don't have a preference for dirty or clean areas-they are as likely to show up in a 5-star hotel as they are to take up residence anywhere else.

Bed bugs can't hide from the experts at Western Pest Service. We now employ bed bug sniffing dogs, one of the most effective bed bug detecting tools available, and offer several types of treatments for infestations.

Western's Advanced Baiting System includes:

Step 1: Western's Advanced Baiting stations with electronic monitoring devices will be placed in the soil around your home.

Step 2: The stations will be checked regularly and scanned electronically for termite activity.

Step 3: The termites will feed on RecruitTM IV termite bait, tunnel out and send other colony nestmates back to feed on the bait. As they do, the colony starts to decline and will eventually be eliminated.

Step 4: After a colony has been eliminated, the bait will be replaced with new electronic monitoring devices. We will continue to inspect these regularly to detect any new colony that might invade your property.

The Importance of Ongoing Monitoring
A new termite colony can invade at any time. Monitoring stations are placed at precise intervals around your home. They stand guard as the first line of defense. When an inspection of a monitoring station shows termite activity, Western introduces the Advanced Baiting System. Immediately, additional bait stations may be installed near the infested monitor and they are constantly monitored and rebaited until all activity ceases. The stations are then re-converted to monitoring status to continue protecting your home.

With 800 hours of intensive training, our dogs are a cutting edge addition to our array of pest control services, and are capable of sniffing out pesky bed bugs in your home or buildings. Our dogs also receive quarterly re-certification and annual re-certification at an off-site canine academy.

All of our dogs are trained using a Scent Diversification Wheel, a process whereby bed bugs are hidden in different compartments throughout a series of training sessions. With the bugs appearing in different areas each time, our dogs learn to always rely on scent to find them.

How Our Dogs Detect Bed Bugs
  • Inspect for bed bugs while at their handler's left side
  • Begin inspection upon the "seek" command and promptly sit when bed bugs are detected
  • Upon the "show me" command, they point with their noses to the specific area with bed bugs
