Western Employee Profile Name: Melanie Dands What are your job responsibilities at Western? I do many things in this role but to sum it up I am responsible for making sure that Western’s Commercial customers’ expectations are fulfilled. I am the communicator between the customer and the Western team when there are unresolved issues. How long have you been at Western? How does Western fit into your career path? I have been with Western for almost 10 years. I started out in sales in Western’s MD/VA Region. I was in that position for over 5 years. I have been in my current role, Retention Specialist, for 4 ½ years. The Retention Specialist role was developed to enhance our overall customer service for our Commercial customers. How would you explain Western’s culture and career opportunities to other women interested in entering the pest control industry? Western has always incorporated women into all areas of the company. I have met so many successful and fulfilled women that feel very proud to be a part of the Western team. Western is dedicated to encouraging advancement for any employee. Women have the same opportunities to grow as men. The talents of the employee determine the advancements; not the gender. I have always felt a great deal of support throughout the years from my managers and the entire Western team. How does Western support and encourage you to succeed? Training is amazing at Western. When you begin your career at Western, part of your training is to shadow other employees in various departments. It gives you an understanding of everyone’s roles and how their roles make the entire company work. It also gives you an idea of possible advancement opportunities for the future. I had some great mentors along the way including my current boss Bob Suriano, Commercial Division Manager. It was his belief in me that helped make my career advancement dream come true. What advice do you have for other women and companies to succeed in the current economy? Women need to dream where they want their career path to go. See the vision and make it happen. There are a few things I believe can help you in any job. Great customer service is essential in every position in any company. Clear communication is also very important when dealing with your customers as well as your team. A positive attitude will always change any stressful atmosphere.
